St. Charles County Urges Proper Leaf Waste Management
Staff Report / StCharles
St. Charles County, Missouri, is reminding residents about the importance of properly managing leaf waste as the fall season brings an abundance of falling leaves. The county warns that leaving leaf waste in streets or drainage ditches can lead to clogged storm drains and increased flooding risk for nearby properties.
In addition, decaying leaf waste can release excess nutrients into stormwater runoff, which can contribute to pollution. To mitigate these issues, residents are encouraged to use local yard waste collection services or to compost the leaves on their own properties.
The county advises residents to keep leaves out of streets, inlets, ditches, drainage swales, and streams. For more information on maintaining healthy waterways, residents can refer to the Stream Care Guide available at sccmo.org/StreamCareGuide.
Residents who observe leaf litter being dumped into creeks, streams, or St. Charles County storm sewers are urged to report the incidents by calling 636-949-7900, ext. 7345.
